Beaches and Parks

Feel like staying on land, but want to get your toes wet, come visit one of our beautiful beaches. Pack a picnic lunch and a few beach towels and soak up the beautiful outdoors. There are also parks for the kids with playgrounds and picnic areas.

Sombrero Beach

Sombrero Beach

Sombrero Beach is a beautiful park and sandy beach. In 2001 the City redeveloped Sombrero Beach to include total handicap accessibility. A lovely sandy beach on the Atlantic Ocean frames a shady park with picnic pavilions, volleyball courts, restrooms and showers. The hours are from 7:30 a.m. until dusk. To get there turn South on Sombrero Beach Road and drive to the end of the road. You are there!

Marathon Community Park

Marathon Community Park

This park is located directly on the Overseas Highway at 200 36th Street Ocean (MM 49). There are four tennis courts, tennis wall, a combination hockey/basketball court (3 courts), two little league fields, and two soccer fields. There is also a skate park, two shuffleboard courts, two boccie ball courts, batting cage, concession stand, amphitheater, picnic areas and restrooms. This facility is handicap accessible. The park hours are 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Jesse Hobbs Park

This park is located at the corner of the Overseas Highway and 41st Street on the gulf side. There is a sandy playground and basketball court with lights, as well as bleachers and restrooms. Hours are 7:30 a.m to 10:00 p.m.

Children`s Rotary Park

Children`s Rotary Park

This park is located at 7575 Overseas Highway (corner of the Overseas highway and 75th Street ocean side). It is an awesome children`s playground built through the ground root efforts of Marathon`s Rotary Club and volunteer efforts. This is a 3 acre park that has wooden playground of swing sets, lookout towers, Thomas the Train, Captain Hook`s Ship, tunnels, slides, a toy shark, and a toddler only area. There is a large picnic pavilion with tables, as well as picnic tables located throughout the park, and restroom facilities. This is a great place to hold a child`s birthday party. Surrounding the playground is a beautifully landscaped park. Hours are 8:00 a.m. to dusk.

Sunset Bay Park on Grassy Key

The City of Marathon is filled with natural treasures such as Sunset Bay Park on Grassy Key`s gulfside (Morton Street and Kyle Avenue). Comprised of three lots, the park also has an upland hammock of vegetation. While wandering among the growth several species of palms can be identified. Native species of Gumbo Limbo, Poisonwood, Sea Grape, Mahogany and Mangrove (white, black and red) provide habitat for crabs and songbirds. White Crown Pigeons make their way in to feed on the Poisonwood berries; Hawks and Vultures patrol the sky; Osprey whistles can pierce the silence or the steady beat of a woodpecker can set the pace for the songs of the Mockingbird and Cardinal. Humming birds flit across and through the undercover checking out the flowering vines of the area.

Kayak Launch at Oceanfront Park

Kayak Launch at Oceanfront Park

Funded by a grant from the Monroe County Tourist Development Council and built by Coffin Marine Services, Inc, located behind City Hall at Oceanfront Park. On the westerly canal, the kayak facility consists of two covered tiki huts linked by a boardwalk, with a ramp down to floating docks which feature two kayak slips for easy launching and access to the Overseas Heritage Paddling Trail. Ample parking is available, including a paved handicapped parking pad.

Coco Plum Beach

Coco Plum Beach

Coco Plum Beach is also on the Atlantic Ocean. It is more of a natural beach area with an adjacent wetland area. There are restroom facilities and a covered pavilion available. Coco Plum Beach is a turtle nesting beach also. To get there turn South on Coco Plum Drive and the beach entrance is 1.4 miles on the right hand side of the road. The hours are from 7:30 a.m. until dusk. Sandy beaches are hard to come by in the "Keys", so when you find one, it`s pretty much like striking gold! We`ve never been to Coco Plum beach when it was too crowded. There`s enough room for everybody! Coco Plum offers the beach lover plenty of solitude and it`s long enough to enjoy a nice romantic stroll with your better half!
